Debbie Jacobs (CPDT-KA, CAP and finalist in the 2008 Dog Writers Association of America Writing Competition) introduces the most effective and humane ways to help fearful, shy or anxious dogs. A guide to the philosophy and techniques for working with fearful, shy or anxious dogs, the book dispels common myths and misinformation regarding fear based behaviors. It provides, in easy to understand language, the most effective and humane ways to handle dogs with fear based behavior challenges. Very useful information and full of resources for shelters, foster care givers, rescue organizations and veterinarians.

While volunteering at the Humane Society of Louisiana's Camp Katrina after the hurricane of 2005, Debbie met Sunny, a border collie mix rescue from a 477 dog hoarding site, She had him transported to her home in Vermont, where he spent the first month cowering in a corner. Thus began the journey of helping Sunny escape from his fears.

It was a journey of discovery for Jacobs too. She learned that changing a dog's fear-based behaviors often begins by changing the way we think about the dog. She learned to change her expectations and see Sunny for who he was, not who she thought he should be. And she discovered the most effective and humane ways to help him and other dogs like him.

While moving heaven and earth to help Sunny, her extremely fearful dog, Debbie Jacobs became an expert on fearful dogs. A Guide to Living With & Training a Fearful Dog is an excellent book for anyone whose life includes a dog who is afraid. It combines explanations of techniques to use with fearful dogs, information on the many resources available to help them, ad a feeling of hope. Because Jacobs lived it, she understands what it's like to work with a dog who is scared in a way so few people do. Her caring, sharing interest in assisting others who want to help a dog overcome fears comes through in every part of this book, and because she's such an excellent writer, it's a pleasure to read. --Karen B. Having lived with, loved, been challenged by, a fearful dog, I loved this book. I wish that I had been able to read it 10 years ago when I first realized the dog that I had adopted had challenges that I was not equipped to handle. Over the years, I learned, made progress, made mistakes, read many books. The information in this book is a great primer to the fearful dog, will spur you on to realize that you CAN help your dog. Of course you will continue to read, to learn, and no one book can have ALL the information you need, but this is a great starting point. Nothing is 100% applicable to every dog, but if I had realized that I had to start my and my dog's journey on her terms, start where she was, we would have had a better relationship from the get-go.

A GUIDE TO LIVING WITH TRAINING A FEARFUL DOG edition by Debbie Jacobs Crafts Hobbies Home eBooks Reviews

This book was recommended by my dog's trainer. I found it very helpful, many tips that I can use daily. There was nothing about the book I disliked except I wish it was longer. )
Like "Control Unleashed" (McDevitt), the author focuses on positive techniques to get training behavior out of dogs. While the philosophy is very similar between the two, they cover somewhat different ground, and offer slightly different insights into dog pscychology, going well beyond the now popular "dominance" theory of dog behavior.

I found this volume to be very understandable. She offers clear insight into psychological concepts in training, which affect the way we train. And, she clearly describes training methods so that I understood why they might work, and how to apply them. You know, real life is almost NEVER like the examples in a book, right? Well, from this volume, I could figure out how to change what I was doing to help train my dog better.

Not just for fearful dogs, the guidance in this book can be applied in other difficult behavior and difficult training situations. For instance, my dog is not so much a problem because he is fearful, but because he is submissive and sensitive. He is not timid, but if he were a person, he would be "thin-skinned". I have a neighbor with a dog who has aggression problems with other dogs. The concepts here can be applied to either situation.

I got two other books at the same time as this one ("Control Unleashed", and "On Talking Terms with Dogs"), and I am glad I did. I learned something from each one that I now apply when training my dogs. And, I am getter better results than I used to!
Informative and well written, this book has proven to be an amazing resource to our home (with two fearful dogs). Thank you Debbie Jacobs for writing this book and sharing the information you've learned from your years of work and research. INVALUABLE! Have reread several times and it's a go-to reference!
This book made a huge difference to us and our adopted fearful dogs. We did not know where to begin with dogs that had were so afraid of us. Thankfully with help from this book we learned what to do, and not do to help our dogs. I recommend this book with anyone with a fearful dog?
It was written in clear concise language and gave me a lot of confidence in dealing with my own dog issues and have recommended it to others. It has a very reassuring, patient approach and helped me understand the "why" and gave me a place to begin to work on the "how" with my dog. Susan M.
I work with the local animal shelter and am fostering a lab mix in my home that was rescued from a hoarding situation. She came to foster care because she was not interacting with dogs in our play group or people at the shelter. This book was helpful in the following ways adjusting my expectations/understanding about the dog's behavior and giving me some very concrete things to do immediately to help her connect with me. It is a concise little book and each time I go back, I pick up something else that is helpful in working with Bear. She has bonded nicely with me. It will not be the only book/resource needed for her development.
There are some very helpful pieces of information in this book. I was most grateful to have someone tell me, "hey, take a breath. This isn't a rush job." I've trained or been privy to the training of several dogs. However, the fearful dog was a challenge I had never taken on. Although the book helped in several situations, honestly what helped most was doggie prozac, which not so surprisingly, is the same as human prozac. I know there are judgements out there on either side of this situation, but I'm confident in this decision.
As a pair, the book and medication for sweet Molly have done a great job to train this lovely fearful border collie mix.
